Vintage 50's dress

I'm quite happy to show you the vintage Advanced dress I sewed this week! I loved the design the second I saw it: love the pleated bodice with the ties detail, love the big skirt with darts and loooove the front closure (zippers are quick to sew!). The instructions are clear and easy, I only had to slightly change the order of the final steps because I used an invisible zipper.

Look at this cute bodice! I'll make a top out of it, it's too adorable

Now for what I don't like that much about the dress: I used tangerine poplin to make it because with the current temperatures it's impossible to wear heavier fabrics. So far so good, right? Well have a look at that:

The fabric wrinkles horribly because of the zigzags I used to finish the edges! It's too thin!!! I had just ironed it so it's not accidental :( I still want to wear my dress because I really like it, the shape and the colour are so nice. I thought a petticoat could improve the situation, alas:

Well I guess I'll wait for my serger to arrive (yeeeees^^) and make another one, with a more suited fabric. A shot of the anorexic petticoat:

  1. Your sewing is great! What lovely and different garments! Your lacy knock off top in a previous post is AWESOME and so cute!

I saw your post on Sew Retro and had to look at the rest of the dress. I agree overlockers/sergers are so much better and will make your next attempt FANTASTIC!

  2. I love the design! It's such a shame about the puckering. I hope you post photo of any more you make!

  3. Salut Cecili, just found your blog through Sew Retro, hence my flurry of comments. This dress is really nice. I can't see the wrinkles in these pics but you could always pretend it's supposed to look like that! Great colour.

  4. That's a very pretty, vintage styled dress. Fits you beautifully. I hate when fabric wrinkles. It's difficult to find a nice cotton that doesn't though.

  6. Gorgeous dress!

I really really love your pinky knock off top. I love ric-rac and I love lace and I would never have thought to use them together! I think I might steal that idea, if you don't mind :)

  7. Oh I just love it! Orange is one of my favorite colors, but I've never yet made anything orange. Can we see what the pattern looks like?

  8. Thank you for the link to the crocheted Frogs. I've bookmarked that site and will try them. They would look especially nice on a knited or crocheted garment.

  9. The dress looks really great, nice color. I noticed that you allways manage to give good shape to the skirt. Hope you will be able to imporve those "imperfections" next time!
